Story

"Well my friend. You are taking a risk sneaking back into Rome like this. If Caesar caught us together he would kill us both slowly and painfully. You know he hates you so much. After you defeated him and put egg on his face, he does not sleep at nights thinking about what he will do to you. I know the Empire is talking about you and thinks you are a hero, but don't let that go to your head. Caesar will come for you no matter where you are. I know you have had to leave your city and escape to the hills with the few soldiers still loyal to you.

I talked with the technicians about those weapons you found. They are very interested but will not risk the wrath of Caesar unless you have prepared suitable housing for them and their families. Also they want you to save them at least one weapon so they can study them when they get there. This might be the only way to escape Caesar's wrath if they can tell him about what you have found. So be quick to build the right houses.

Now about the fact that you have no money. I cannot, even with my connections to Caesar's treasury, give you any money. However privately, I may be able to slip a few Denarii into your personal account. And also I talked with a few traders that may be interested in some of those weapons. You know traders, they will risk even Caesar, to make money.

From how you describe the location of the weapons you found, I think it is the location of an ancient missing city. It has been lost for many years but you seem to have found it. From the old records I should warn you that the natives there value their peace and quiet. I would be very cautious about removing any trees from around their houses. They don't like that.

Now, finally, for we have talked too long now, the bad news. I inquired of the military commander, just what was happening with you. They have a fair idea of your whereabouts and a number of armies are on their way to get you. The first should arrive in a matter of months and you will struggle to get back in time. The next army is about a year away and then a very large army is being raised up now to also get to you in a couple of years if the first two fail. So at best you have about 3 years, my friend to complete those houses and get the technicians there. Those "scientist types" also demand all sorts of entertainment and schooling for their children. They also like to worship every god so you will have to do some building.

Anyway, all the best, my friend and get safely out of Rome and back to your soldiers."

Rules

All entries must meet the following completion criteria at the time of submission:

Completion Criteria

  • At least 1 weapon in warehouses
  • Not to be in debt
  • Culture 100
  • No gifts given to Caesar
  • 10 fully occupied grand insulae

All valid entries will then be separated according to the following winning criteria:

  1. Speed (fastest wins)
  2. Treasury (Greatest treasury wins)

The second criterion is only applicable if the first criterion produces a tie.

Designer's Notes

Since Caesar is mad at you, you won't get any requests in this scenario and there is no starting cash or rescue loan. Your friend in Rome has donated some cash in your personal savings to get you started. Money can be made by selling the weapons.

If you want to do a test run, make sure that you have a sufficient (at least 100) population. If you have not enough people in your city when Caesar's Legions come, they will think that you have run and you will get fired.

This scenario has a Peace rating requirement of 100. This is designed to block victory. You should ignore this requirement and concentrate on improving your winning criteria.

The Ancient City was designed by Philon, and beta-tested by Pecunia and Caesar Clifford. The story was written by Caesar Clifford.

This contest will close at 11 PM EST (US), on Saturday, May third. Please note the date!!!!
