Questor.

I am replaying this map and know it well. When Caesar requested troops, I was expecting it. I sent ALL MY SIX LEGIONS of academy trained legionaries. All were in 'perfect' condition. Each fort was fully manned by the full sixteen complement of legionaries. Each is in the strongest academy formation.

They were defeated.

I also note that in the empire window that the six 'perfect' legions are still on the march to defeat the enemy and that the legion status shows all six legions are still fully manned and still in 'perfect' condition.

Perhaps not enough time has passed since I received the fatal *.smk for the other windows to adjust. OR, did the "wrong" *.smk pop up? or...

...what an enemy!

Well, the *.smk was not a fluke.

Now tell me, how can this happen? Now I have enemies approaching and I have one single legionare left, on his way home, out of ninety-six. He is terribly frightened.

I now have NO shot at winning this game. The enemy will surely be here before I am able to restore my legions even though I have no problem with the barracks, the millitary academy, or the weapons - of which I have 284 in stock. Labor will not be a problem either. But, walls and towers and Mars won't be able to fight off the enemy.

For the doubting Thomas out there, I was lucky enough to have a saved game only about a year from the impending doom, should you want to observe for yourself the strength of my forces.

Have you installed the update patch of C3 ?? I've had the same problem at Mediolanum (don't know which rank I had, maybe it's the same level ??) after 'patching' and furthermore very strange other effects on the game, such as nonsense text messages concerning my hippodrome ( I had none neither could I build one). If that's the point & you have lately installed the patch, try to re-download it, uninstall & re-install C3 patching it with the newer downloaded patch. In my case, it helped!!!
May Mars be with you!!!

Got the patch.

It is really disappointing to see a defeat with a window stating that I should have sent a larger force.

Would you sign a defense pact with me so that in the future we can combine our armies and perhaps have better luck?

I suggest you delete all fortsand quickly build a legion of only javelin units and use fire and retreat tatcics to defeat the enemy the next enemy invasion. The performace of troops you send on empire duty will not be effected by deleting thier forts. The simply won't return. Javelin troops you create to replace them can be recruited with great speed, possibly before the enemy invades, and using the tactics of alternate fire and retreat they will defeat any full sized enemy army if you have enough map space to retreat into, or can deftly manuever them around over the same space as they pick off the enemy, but retreat before being attacked. I have had my own fort glicjhes, whic goaway when I simply delete the fort and replace it.

What about the health of the legionaries? They affect more than the morale of the legionaries, too.... And make sure there is no mounted ones - the surely all die out!

Health, 'perfect', morale, 'perfect'. No auxiliaries-javelin, or mounted. You are the first to mention mounted ones.

These, as previously stated, were academy trained legionaries, in the 'box' formation. All were in PERFECT, PERFECT condition. No injuries, no second thoughts about joining up, no dear john letters from home.

Could it be those walker sprite limits bug that I've answered so long ago and now it came back??? Oh yes, the city can keep up to 1000 walker sprites, so maybe your city is too big! If recent fires, houses devoting for NO reason, found that workshps are idle and workers in a flash and gone, this is a reason why this is the problem, because your legions 'back home' are counted 16 walker sprites!!!

I'm not sure about this, but sorry if this is an misunderstood this problem...

Good Luck!

The stuff below is obviously posted in the wrong spot since it has nothing to do with this thread.

Hey, keep cool, he was just trying to give another point of view, another possibiity to solve the problem!! BTW, has the problem been fixed by reinstalling & re-downloading the patch??; your response sounded positive, but not directly saying it worked. I would be quite happy to hear I could help :-)

Actually I had the patch already. Even if I did as you suggest, it would not apply to the game at hand, would it? If I reinstalled the patch, is it backward compatible? Will I then win the battle?

As an update, when I lost the battle, Caesar was angry and sent his troops to slaughter what legions I could rebuild. AND...the troops from Rome arrived just as the Carthaginians arrived. It wasn't pretty. They beat me all the way back to Architect. ;-)

Cheer up! - Caesar and the Carthaginians have to be a piece of cake compared to those guys (whoever they were) who whipped your six legions in the first place!

Buddy, at Impressions, was kind enough to evaluate my game concerning the six legions that were defeated when Caesar asked for help in another province. The details are posted below on 4/21/1999.

The answer is that six legions are too many to send. It's sorta like a wrap around where one is not enough and two is ok and three is fine and four will knock 'em dead and FIVE will KICK THEIR BUTTS...but six reverts back to not enough. (even 5 may - I haven't tried it and won't)

The evaluation suggested that the programming never expected that anyone would send all six legions so the game did not know how to handle it and simply defaulted its logic to one legion, which would not be enough and would be defeated.

So, I am starting over. Now, if I could just get my granary to function, I might not have to start over AGAIN...
