Caesar III Best Scenario Contest 2007, Contest #120
Caesar III Best Scenario Contest 2007, Contest #120
CBC is honoured to be able to continue Duan Xuan's annual series of scenario design contests after a break of four years. For the first event of this type here we will stick rather closely to the original design, it will be a contest for C-III scenario's and there will be a theme. This year's theme will be (Global) Climate Change. The main difference with the original series is that the scenario's should be suitable to be used in a contest setting. Designers should prepare a scenario using the C-III editor, preferably making their own terrain map, but it is allowed to make use of an existing map and just edit the event list and other settings. Any type of contest scenario is allowed, either the standard individual contest, played at hard and easy, or a team contest map, usually played at normal, a series of (short) scenario's such as the Imperial Assessment, or any new type of setup. An integral part of the scenario is the accompanying text file, as will be displayed on the contest page. Designers may choose to work alone, or as a team, also note the remarks in the next section. The less restrictions, the more room for creative ideas. The only requirement is that the scenario can be played as a contest. Another difference with the original BSC and regular contests here at CBC is that designers are offered assistance. We require all our contest maps to be thoroughly tested, first at apha level by the designer, next at beta level by one or two testers. CBC will provide designers with beta testers if so asked. Beta testing often results in modifications to the scenario that improve its enjoyability for a larger audience. The final scenario's will be assessed by Goonsquad and Joshofet. They are also available for testing and advice, so if a designer has any questions or wants feedback on an initial design, do not hesitate to contact one of us by personal message. Doing so will not negatively influence your chances of winning, on the contrary . The deadline for submitting scenario's is December 31st at midnight. Submissions can made by uploading a zipped archive of all the relevant files (map, save and text, notes, questions) to the upload page of CBC. The designer(s) of the winning scenario will gain eternal honour. All scenario's are eligible for a contest here at CBC. |

Above is the formal announcement of our new contest. Some more information can be found on the contest page, and you can upload your (provisional) entry, should you already have one, here. A bit more informal now; I have been planning this for some time but never got round to actually starting the event. If this is a success we will start the BSC 2008 a bit earlier, not sure whether that will be a C-III event again, so if C-III is your favourite and you still have some holidays left, here is your opportunity to spend them optimally .
The number of the contest is 120, there are still a few others in the pipeline, but we do not want to wait much longer with this event. As a contest it is of course very different from our others, maybe it will compare a bit with the beauty contests. In another thread the question has been raised how we will objectively judge the maps. To be honest, we won't, but like with a beauty contest we will set a list of criteria by which we judge a scenario. I have done that for several beauty contests, and using that list the ranking between different judges was invariably almost identical. Even so, as all entries are eligible for a contest here at CBC, you also have the opportunity to partake in the Players' Choice Award 2008, so you can win two competitions with a single entry! What are you waiting for? This contest is also different in the sense that we do not have the same map we are all playing simultaneously, so there is no need to have a complete radio silence while the contest is running. No risk for spoilers ..., well, be aware that you do not discuss details of the scenario you are designing, since it can, and I sincerely hope will, once be used in a real contest setting, and you wouldn't want to run the risk of spoiling the fun of the players far in advance. Still you can tell that you are working on a map, you may invite others to join you, ask for testers, or even discuss some ideas. Also questions about the contest in general can be freely discussed here, if you have question pertaining to a map you are designing, please write a personal message to me or Goonsquad or both. Whoa, it's an honour to have my little contest being continued by CBC. Thanks for reviving it, and good luck to you guys and all contestants. I really doubt I'll be able to participate due to RL commitments though. Hopefully we can get lots of high quality submissions.

I have an idea for a good contest map but other than the story will have nothing to do with climate change. Any other topic and I would probably have sent several entries already. But this one is like an ich in the middle of my back. I just can't get to it. So do you want my entry with the above restrictions or not ?

I'd suggest ignore the theme and make your entry Cliff. Then you can either find some obscure, devious and tenuous way of working it in, or just don't worry about it at all. I've had the same issue, actually I have an old incomplete project I was going to finish and submit, but how to work the theme in?
Clearly it's going to take some creativity to work a 21st century issue into a game depicting ancient times. |

The theme is put there to inspire you, not to hold you back. I have two C-III maps, Save the Forest and Woodstock, that refer directly to environmental issues. In both ones the scarcity of wood is a central feature.
You could do the same with water, or olives, or grapes. Make wolves an endangered species and forbid killing or pinning them down, restrict fishing, or only allow wheat, vegs and fruit for a strictly vegetarian diet. Just make up some story around it to blow it up to a global problem. One of the (remotely) possible causes suggested for the downfall of the Roman Empire was the use of lead in the glazing of pottery, so even that can be used. So if you, or anyone else has an idea for a C-III map, by all means come forward, and we will find a way of fitting it into the theme, frankly I can't think of any scenario I cannot fit into. Note that we will help you develop your scenario, and such help will in no way disqualify you for winning the contest, on the contrary I dare say. I will happily scratch your back, don't expect you to return the favour. |

Much of the Sahara was a lush area long before the Pyramids. They found Hippo bones in the desert indicating the Sahara has had a drastic climate change.
Just dreaming off the top of my mind: Pharaoh dreams of the ice age lushness, decides to build.... Pharaoh's courtiers discover ancient remains of animals. A temple complex must be built to get them to return the land to firtility. erm... more to come. Am just waking up.. We are fixing the forum this morning so I'd better be awake. We might be down for an hour or two. Gloria Last edited by JuliaSet; 11-25-2007 at 08:06 AM. |

Since everyone participating IN the contest is also judging, I will take the final tally along with joshofet. Designers please send me your votes.

My deepest regrets but I do not have the time or energy to judge this contest at present.
Real Life is so hectic at present that I am barely keeping up with the necessary jobs let alone doing anything else. April/May is looking like the busiest two months of my life [ and considering I usually work a 80-90 hour week thats saying a lot. ]. At present I am already well into calving cows and we are in the middle of the worst drought since at least 1962 which makes it twice as hard because there is nothing to feed the cows. Every job that comes up gets the Can I leave it till June ? question then if so it gets left and I try and do some of the things needed doing in the next 4 months. There is a lot that has to be done by 1st June and I can't imagine what will happen if its ane by then. If I survive the work till June things must settle down a bit. Till then I am just going to be happy if I get the odd entry in any contest that I can and hope to be able to take part in the c3 team event. Once again my apologies but I still have not yet even looked at any of the maps.

Cesar20 has also indicated he won't be judging. That leaves Joshofet and myself. I have sent my scores to Joshofet (and JuliaSet as well) along with instructions that he is free to choose the winner, taking my voting into account if he wishes.
The upshot of it all is that we now have four excellent C3 maps to present, plus the audition, which I have made in the image of my BSC entry (which will be the main team contest map). So despite this rather sad turn of events, the BSC can only be regarded as an outstanding success. |

Sorry it took me a while longer to score the three maps I did not design myself. There were four entries in total:
I seem to be forgetting something, what can that be??? Ah, I guess you want a winner, since what is contest without a winner? Let's not get too philosophical about this though, there was a winner indeed, be it by a small margin only, but the winner nonetheless is Polluteus Maximus. Congratulation Caesar Clifford! (Sorry for the bad colours, I'm afraid I spilled some coffee or something over it.) |
