Contest 56: The Gauntlet, a Pharaoh Speed Contest

Welcome to the contest pages for Contest 56: The Gauntlet This is a Pharaoh contest, and should only be played with the latest version of Pharaoh. Use the links below to download the starting positions:

The Gauntlet Easy
The Gauntlet Hard
files are in exe format

After downloading, PC players should open the archive with a suitable programme (e.g. Winzip) Then place the unzipped file in your family save directory (in the Pharaoh root directory, Save, [YourFamilyName]; by default C:\Sierra\Pharaoh\Save\[YourFamilyName]\).

To play the game, start Pharaoh, go to your family, and select "Load Saved Game". You will find The Gauntlet-Easy or The Gauntlet-Hard as a saved game. It should be preset at the appropriate difficulty level.

Please make sure you play the game from the start at the correct level of difficulty. Select Options, Difficulty and check it. If necessary adjust the difficulty, select new game and reselect the The Gauntlet saved game. Now you can play.

All players are advised to peruse the remainder of the contest pages (links to which can be found at the foot of the page), as well as the General Rules and Pharaoh/Cleopatra game features.

Story

Seth be praised! Pharaoh Hetepsekhemwy has returned from the Eastern border victorious; the Canaanite army crushed by our chariots outside Giza. With the East now secure, Pharaoh looks afresh to the South.

Many years of Kushite incursions have vastly reduced our holdings there. Even the great city of Abu has fallen to them. Pharaoh desires to take back what is his.

Before we can mount an offensive, however, the Southern border must be strengthened. You must go to Behdet, and establish a forward command post there, and begin raising an army to supplement Pharaoh's forces. To show the Kushites we mean not to surrender, you should construct a mighty Obelisk in honour of Pharaoh's victories in Canaan.

Be warned: while Behdet may seem secure, it is not beyond the reach of a Kushite raiding party. If they get wind of our plans, you may have some trouble.

Designer's Notes

There is an additional win criteria built into the map to prevent premature victory. This goal (1 Common Manor) cannot be met and should be ignored. Simply concentrate on meeting the winning criteria as quickly as possible.

You will have to face at least two invasions.

Failure to comply with requests will result in trade routes being irreversibly terminated.

An increase in the price of Lettuce occurs every December as a reminder to make your annual save.

Gauntlet was created by Caesar Alan and beta-tested by Aditya and PurplePinkie.

This contest will close at 11PM EST (US), on Sunday, April 25th. Please note the date!!!!

This contest has ended.
