Story

Rome's most skillful governors are on duty in the outer reaches of the expanding empire. In this situation, someone recommend you for the next imperial assignment...

You enter the main office of the proconsul for Roma and a haughty official starts to brief you on your mission: "Caesar wishes to hold a grand festival for all citizens of the city of Roma when he returns from his ongoing conquests. Therefore, and also to appease the picky nobility, we require regular shipments and in the end a large stock of good wine. You are to establish a small city at the foot of the Vesuvius, not far away from Roma. Your new province, despite the fact that it does not have farmland in abundance, is famous for it's rich wines due to the fertile soil and the warm climate. Even the ripe grapes are delicious."

Although the official is a little skeptical of your competence, he tells you that this assignment might be your chance to become one of Caesar's most appreciated governors. "But only if you deliver all goods we are going to request in time and also to stay out of debt", he adds. The official seems to chuckle in secret over how few requests, he thinks, you will be able to fulfill at all.

"The land was formerly cultivated by local peasants who had to be resettled up river to less favorable land with the help of a few troops", he says. "The peasants are not really happy with the current situation, they chose to remain stubborn. However, Caesar puts trust in you, that you will teach them that wine for Rome's nobility is more important than wheat for the rural folk! He has ordered the raise of two guard towers to keep off the hungry rabble, who apparently adopted a barbaric attitude in the meantime. It is up to you to man the towers or not", the official ends his instructions.

Rules

All entries must meet the following completion criteria:

Completion Criteria

  • 1000 people
  • Culture of 50 or higher
  • Prosperity of 25 or higher for hard; Prosperity of 15 or higher for easy.
  • No gifts to Caesar

All valid entries will then be separated according to the following winning criteria:

  1. Highest Favor
  2. Stored wine

Designer's Notes

Remember to save in December AD 5.

The judges will let the game run until January AD 6 and then check your Prosperity rating. All other completion and winning criteria are measured at the time of your save in December AD 5. Wine will count as reported by the trade advisor. The second winning criterion is only applicable if the first criterion produces a tie.

You gain four Favor points for every request fulfilled in time. The requests are more challenging than in original campaign scenarios. A barracks is only useful to staff the towers. There's no rescue loan available. The easy map has, in comparison with the hard map, a lower prosperity requirement, higher starting funds, fewer goods per request, and fewer attacking peasants (called barbarians here).

This scenario has a Peace rating requirement of 100. This is designed to block victory. You should ignore this requirement and concentrate on improving your winning criteria, especially your Favor rating.

Veni, Vidi, Vino! was created by Caesar Jan and beta-tested by Caesar Philon.

This contest will close at 11 PM EST (US), on Thursday, July 31st. Please note the date!!!!
