Story

Battle-weary, you trudge up the steps to the audience chamber. The road from Germania has been as long and unforgiving as the Huns you have fought for the last six years. Finally it is at an end, or so you thought.

"Welcome, Marcus Hivernus. I trust your journey was not too unpleasant? I hear what pass for roads in Germania are, shall we say, less exquisite than the Via Appia. Doubtless you are wondering why you are here?"

You nod, respectfully.

"Your exploits in Germania have acquired you quite some reputation. It has been said that you are a leader of men. I do hope I have not been misinformed..."

"Where I have led, some have been willing to follow, O Caesar."

"Excellent answer, young man. I have always been keen to reward ability, and you have shown no small measure of that in Germania. I have decided to promote you, to command of a small, but elite, force. You are to lead this strike force, the XCIVth army, into the heart of Gaul, where a small local chieftain, Vercingetorix, is making something of a nuisance of himself. He is currently leading his forces, and those of one of his confederates, to the city of Lutetia, which he intends to capture.

He believes Lutetia to be undefended, as the XXIIIrd army, normally garrisoned there, are fighting the Huns in northeast Gaul. He will, I have no doubt, be surprised to find you and the XCIVth army in residence.

Although you will have the benefit of surprise, Vercingetorix and his allies will have numerical superiority. You may be advised to enlarge your forces by conscripting some of the local population to your cause. Whatever you decide, you will crush Vercingetorix, and his confederates, and swiftly. See to it, General Hivernus!"

The road to Gaul stretches out before you, long and unforgiving...
